Scottsdale Water puts the cause plainly: low rainfall, hot weather and mineral-rich soil all contribute to Arizona's very hard water. What the published figures add is that hardness is not the same from one address to the next. Mesa says the hardness a home sees depends on the water source serving its area, and Scottsdale publishes different figures for different parts of the city.
The sources themselves differ. Mesa uses a combination of Colorado River water delivered through the Central Arizona Project, Salt and Verde river water and locally pumped groundwater. Chandler draws most of its supply from the Salt and Verde rivers by way of the Consolidated Canal, with the balance from a treatment plant it shares with Gilbert and from its own wells.
Hard water leaves evidence you can see. The City of Mesa points to the white, chalky film on faucets and shower doors. Scottsdale Water describes scale as a hard white or yellowish coating that forms inside pipes and on appliances and fixtures, where it can reduce the efficiency of some appliances and clog faucets and aerators.
